Ask the Dentist – Is an electric toothbrush really better than a manual toothbrush?

Ask the Dentist – Is an electric toothbrush really better than a manual toothbrush?

by Dr Mark Rehermann

In short, the answer is… yes!

Research shows that electric toothbrushes clean teeth and gums more efficiently and effectively than a manual toothbrush. Studies indicate that people who use an electric toothbrush have fewer cavities, healthier gums, and keep their teeth for longer (compared to those that use a manual toothbrush).

There are still many debates about which specific electric toothbrushes are superior, but there is no question that as a whole, they are better for our oral health in comparison to their manual counterpart.

An electric toothbrush is an excellent investment that will benefit the health of your mouth, but it’s important to remember that whether you use an electric toothbrush or a manual one, you still need to follow a proper routine for optimal oral health. This means you should be brushing for two minutes, twice a day, with a fluoride or hydroxyapatite toothpaste and incorporating floss into your routine once a day. If you are diligent about a good oral health routine, you can achieve a healthy mouth either way!
